On Tuesday 11th July, the Government announced it wanted 20% of the UK's energy to be generated from renewables by 2020. The renewable energy industry is growing, and that means careers opportunities in the sector are growing too.
Careers in Renewable Energy has features on breaking into the sector, opportunities for engineers, and advice on how to build your career from working for a small organisation to careers with some of the sector's leading players.
The publication also features a guide to courses and training, as well as a detailed resources section.
Three career profiles, featuring people already working in the sector, illustrate the opportunities the sector offers.
Gideon Burrows, editor of The Ethical Careers Guide, said:
"A career in renewable energy is one of the most positive and direct ways you can contribute to the fight against climate change and global environmental damage. The race to develop effective and economically sustainable renewable energy programmes has made renewable energy one of the fastest growing job markets in the UK."
The British Wind Energy Association estimates recent investment in wind energy alone could lead to the creation of 5,000 engineering, and 19,000 other new jobs by 2010.
A 2004 report by the Department for Trade and Industry estimated that there were around 5,500 people in full-time employment in the sector and that this number was set to rise. It said the renewable energy industry could sustain up to 35,000 jobs per year by 2020.
Neil Crupton, energy campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:
"A career in renewable energy is increasingly one of the most crucial areas of work that job seekers could consider. Global climate change caused by emissions from fossil fuel energy generation makes it imperative that low carbon and carbon-negative energy sources are researched, developed, constructed and operated.”
